Responsibilities and Qualifications

Obtains approriate handoff communication from the RN responsible for the assigned patient to include information regarding the patient’s identified care needs, diagnosis, visual, auditory, or language barriers, as well as any special consideration (NPO, bed alarms, fall risk, ambulation status etc.).

Positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient. Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the RN responsible for the assigned patient. Observant of the patient’s activity and behavior and communicates on a regular basis to the responsible RN. Receives direction from the RN regarding what to report, to whom, and how.

Assists the responsible RN/PCA to provide the assigned patient general comfort measures, safety, and satisfaction. Maintains patient environment in a safe and orderly manner.

Notifies RN of any untoward events, i.e., behavioral changes, violent behavior, etc.

Functions cooperatively as a team member. Responds as directed by responsible RN to changing patients'/unit's needs. During a patient or environmental emergency, may serve as a runner or transport patients as directed.

Communication:

6.1 Utilizes Personal Service communication techniques in all interactions,

6.2 Assures timely notification of changes in patient to responsible RN.

6.3 Utilizes constructive problem solving techniques to promote change and deal with issues. Follows appropriate communication channel (i.e., responsible PCA , RN, charge nurse, or nurse manager) for addressing issues, concerns, and problems.

6.4 Communicates in a diplomatic and professional manner and collaborates with team members.

6.5 Effectively communicates pertinent shift information with the responsible RN with the goal of improving patient care processes and the quality of care that is delivered.

6.6 Contributes to staff meeting content as needed.

6.7 Performs end of shift hand-off with oncoming sitter and responsible RN/PCA.

9.1 Participates in unit-based, system wide and ministry wide performance improvement activities.

9.2 Participates in committee activities.

9.3 Uses the chain of command to address issues or concerns as needed.

9.4 Assists in developing a plan of action to meet unit based performance standards and assists co-workers to meet these standards.

Patient Satisfaction:

10.1 Accomplishes improvements in patient satisfaction with services received in the hospital; strives to exceed expectations of our customers

10.2 Supports ongoing development of the Personal Service program throughout the ministry.

Patient Flow:

11.1 Understands the patient flow status of the hospital to meet patient needs.

11.2 Holds self and co-workers accountable for accommodating patient flow throughout the hospital.

11.3 Safely transports patients within the facility as directed.

Professional Development:

12.1 Demonstrates personal growth.

12.2 Holds self and others accountable for actions and outcomes.

12.3 Answers for the results of own behaviors and actions.

Wears proper personal protective equipment when appropriate. Observes universal precautions consistently. Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance. Meets and exceeds Health System attendance standards. Complies with Health System social media policy guidelines. Performs related duties as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned by the responsible RN, charge nurse, and/or Nurse Manager.

Qualifications:

Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support instruction upon hire or completion within the 90 day probationary period.

Other: Skills, knowledge and abilities: Capable of observing patient and remaining alert at all times while on duty. Ability to communicate with hospital co-workers and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes by reporting and summoning assistance. Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients,visitors and staff. Working conditions, mental and physical requirements: Ability to sit for long periods of time remaining alert without distractions from personal business or other personal diversions. Occasional standing and walking.

Preferred Education: Enrollment in a health care curriculum.

Preferred Experience: Previous experience in a health care environment.
