Located in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is a tertiary care teaching hospital providing the highest level quality care from cardiology to neurology to primary and mental health care for more than 70,000 Veterans along the South Carolina and Georgia coast. For the past two years, the Ralph H. Johnson VA achieved an overall annual 5-Star rating according to VA's Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning Value (SAIL) model. The Charleston VA is also ranked in the top 10th percentile according to the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS). HEDIS is an independent review that measures performance of 90 percent of America's health plans and facilities in both the public and private sector on dimensions of care and service. The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is a center of excellence for robotic surgery and orthopedics, and is the first VA National Tele-Mental Health Hub providing care for Veterans across the U.S. The 149-bed hospital includes six community based outpatient clinics, a 20-bed nursing home, women's health, and the full range of inpatient and outpatient care, including medical and surgical intensive care. The VAMC provides more than 875,000 outpatient visits and approximately 4,400 in-patient stays annually. With more than 2,500 employees, Charleston VA has an annual budget of $520 million, research funding of more than $21 million, and more than 100 principle investigators participating in approximately 300 research studies.

The primary purpose of the position is to assist the Fisher House Manager in providing temporary lodging - a "home away from home" to family members of patients being treated at the RHJ VA Medical Center or affiliated facilities by participating in the direct, on-site management and administration of the Fisher House program.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 3:30 pm - midnight (Tour of duty subject to change based on the needs of the facility).

Physical Requirements:The work is minimally sedentary. Frequent walking, climbing stairs, standing,, carrying household items and files and driving an automobile are required. The incumbent must pass initial and recurring physical exams to operate government vehicles to transport Veterans and families who lodge at our Fisher House.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For this vacancy applicants must have held a GS-5 for 52 weeks to be eligible for the GS-6.
Specialized Experience: "Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Participates in the implementation of operational policies related to eligibility, admission, length of stay, behavior standards for guests
Executes policies or procedures for scheduling
Prepares assignment guides, schedules, training materials, evaluations and letters of reference
Develops information and communication for use on multiple platforms
Develops and disseminates in-house materials for educating guests and medical center staff
Education: Applicants may substitute 18 semester hours of graduate level education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. Education must be in a field directly related to the position such as Business Administration or Finance with course study in Administration. (Graduate level transcripts will be required).
Combination of Education & Experience: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned. Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-06. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.
