VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) is the second busiest VA system in the nation and we are growing! Comprised of the Dallas VA Medical Center, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic and Tyler VA Primary Care Clinic, VANTHCS is an integrated health care system with approximately 4,000 employees and over 1,600 volunteers and clinical trainees. VANTHCS also coordinates a Community Based Outpatient Clinic program throughout its 40-county primary service area to improve access to care for veterans throughout 38 North Texas and 2 in southern Oklahoma. Through these four distinctive facilities and relationships with other agencies, VANTHCS offers a continuum of health care services to a veteran population of approximately 500,000.

Housed on an 84-acre campus, Dallas VA Medical Center is the corporate headquarters for VANTHCS and serves as the tertiary referral center. Through its partnership with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UT Southwestern), it also has emerged as a major teaching and medical research center. Primary care and multi-specialty outpatient clinics are also provided, making VANTHCS the second largest health care system based on number of patients seen.

Responsibilities

General Surgery Physician Assistant duties includes performance at Dallas VA surgical clinics, operating room suite, medical/surgical/psychiatric in-patient units, day surgery unit, emergency department, and C&P; examination for those trained in the C&P; modality. All approved clinical activities are assumed to be non-OR unless otherwise specifically stated, and receiving, reviewing, and acting upon consults and E-consults.

As a Physician Assistant in General Surgery duties will also include: care coordination, diagnosis and treatment of disease, documenting assessments and interventions, health promotion, education, and counseling, history and physical, discharge summary, assist in OR and perform duties as designated by responsible physician, obtain consent for procedures or treatments to be performed by the PA and for procedures for which the PA actively participates as an integral member of the treatment team performing the procedure such as assisting the primary surgeon, obtaining laboratory specimens, ordering laboratory, radiologic, and diagnostic tests, participate in ongoing professional practice evaluation, focused professional practice evaluation, and other quality assurance activities, perform EKG, perform injection and aspiration procedures, perform visual screening tests, preparing treatment plans, prescription initiation and refill of routine non-narcotic/non-controlled medications, preventive health screening, referral to other subspecialties, suturing of minor lacerations, removal of sutures/staples, requesting consultations, uncomplicated I&D; procedures, venipuncture, writing treatment orders, simple wound care/debridement, postoperative evaluations, and evaluation of new consults. Anoscopy, arterial puncture, wound check, manages General Surgery PA Procedure Clinic, performs excision of minor superficial lesions (excluding facial lesions), and remove Mediports under local anesthesia. Other duties as assigned by managing physician.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week. Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Education. The candidate must meet the following: (1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and (2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Certification (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. (2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5. (3) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.

  • Physical Standards.

  • English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
