The Denver VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS) is complexity level 1a and provides a full range of state-of- the-art patient care services. We are also in the final stages of construction on a brand new replacement Medical Center. The new VA Medical Center will be one of the largest and newest VA hospitals in the US. The RMR VAMC will be a 182-bed hospital which will include a 30-bed spinal care injury treatment center. Located on the world class Anschutz Medical Campus, the new VA hospital will neighbor with the University of Colorado Hospital, the Children's Hospital of Colorado, and the University of Colorado Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health and Pharmacy. Denver offers a mild climate with year-round recreational activities, diverse cultural attractions, excellent schools and a wide range of housing options, lifestyles and sports. It will provide tertiary care and services to over 92,000 patients and is a major referral center for veterans living in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and New Mexico. ECHCS serves as an educational and research center, it is highly affiliated with medical and educational institutions. Health Care Services are provided at 15 different geographically dispersed locations incorporating nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Primary Care Telehealth Outpatient Clinics, one Community Living Center, Homeless Veteran's Domiciliary, a Community Referral and Resource Center, a Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA presence on two DOD bases; Fort Carson and U.S. Air Force Academy covering a geographical area of over 40,000 square miles. ECHCS employs over 3,000 personnel in 150 occupations.

Responsibilities

Pours dental impression with the proper dental stone. Fabricates both hard and soft dental splints as per laboratory prescription. Properly adjusts occlusion with hard splints and finishes. Repairs dental splints with the appropriate materials needed for the case then polishes and finishes splint. Receives, interprets and processes prescriptions. Controls and coordinates shipments for program area. Checks for the presence of dentist's prescription. Packs master models and completed dentures for shipment. Receives and unpacks incoming cases. Checks shipping containers for evidence of damage and reports damaged shipments to the supervisor. Matches dentist's prescription with master casts or completed cases by checking patient's name, case number, or other control symbol. Packs cases for shipment. Posts control records indication dates of receipt of shipment of cases and the number and status of cases in processes. Reviews shipment to ensure contents match request. Brings discrepancies to the supervisor's attention. Employee receives assignments for tasks to complete portions of difficult prescriptions interpreted by higher grade technician or the dentist. Interprets prescriptions for full or partial dentures or for repair of dentures. Dentist Checks work for conformance to prescription and the master cast.

Fabricates and completes dentures and partial dentures. As laboratory support, incumbent replenishes supplies, cleans, and stacks shelves laboratory equipment. Measures and mixes materials and compounds used in the fabrication of dentures. Replenishes supplies as necessary. Notes and follows manufacturers or other instructions regarding the storage of laboratory materials. Checks to insure that volatile materials are not stored near flame, that liquid compounds subject to evaporation are tightly covered and materials with a time limited shelf life are removed and replaced as necessary. Bead and boxes impressions by applying a beading wax to the perimeter of the impression and building side walls with boxing wax or metal strips to retain the plaster or stone mix. Mixes and pour plaster on dental stone to form a positive cast of the patient's mouth. Vibrates mix during the pouring process to eliminate air bubbles. Removes casts from impression and inspects for defects. Mixes, pours and attaches plaster bases to casts to permit them to be mounted on the articulator. Checks impressions for bubbles or breaks. Joins breaks with sticky wax. When set examines for completeness and accuracy. Trims excess stone. Positions casts on articulator and cuts locks to insure accurate repositioning. Make duplicates of master casts for use in fabrication dental appliances. Uses any one of several duplication impression materials, and any one of several types of plaster, stone of investment to pour the casts. After the material has set, removes duplicate cast from flask, trims, and removes any adhering impression material. Constructs base plates, bite rims, and individualized impression trays. Blocks out undercuts in the cast. Applies material to the cast. Trims and round borders for precise and comfortable fit in the patient's mouth. Places spacers for construction of the impression tray if indicated. Molds, contours, and positions the occlusion rim on the base plate. Waxes, invests, boils out, cures and deflasks acrylic bases for partial and complete dentures using any one of several technical procedures. Measures and mixes acrylic resin and trail packs the acrylic "dough" into the mold. Processes acrylic by immersing sealed flask in temperature controlled water for specified period of time. Controls cooling to minimize shrinkage of the acrylic. Waxes acrylic for partial dentures. Melts wax and forms it to fit the pattern marked on the master cast. Trims edges, builds, and smoothes wax to achieve prescribed thickness. Uses small flame torch and heated spatula to shape and contour the wax and simulate the anatomy of the mouth. Waxes full trial dentures so that the dentist may check final tooth arrangement, appearance, speech and function. Shapes wax to the contours desired in the final denture and to the thickness required to maintain facial contours, insure comfort, and provide proper fit. Carves and contours wax to duplicate the appearance of natural oral tissue. Removes excess wax, smoothes and polishes surfaces.

Repairs dentures. Selects, positions, contours and fits replacement teeth. Bends, adapts, and weld wrought wire to replace broken components. Solders cast clasps to the framework. Replaces or adds acrylic to repair of rebase dentures.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/01/2017.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: * Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: * Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. * Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. * Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers. * Construction of dental prosthetic appliances.
