*Position Description Title/PD #: Voluntary Service Assistant (Ambassador) # 70442-A*

The Voluntary Service Assistant (Ambassador) works under the supervision of the Voluntary Service Officer receiving assignments that require application of standard procedures or special procedures that are identified and explained. The Voluntary Service Assistant works the front desk and other areas of the hospital assisting the Voluntary Service Officer ensuring Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is able to provide excellent customer service to veteran patients. TVHS is a Category I Health Care Facility that boasts of a staff of over 3,000 employees with 575 beds and provides general medical and surgical care, nursing home care, psychiatric care, and domiciliary services. TVHS is affiliated with Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College; and has active affiliation agreements with several medical and allied health programs within and outside Tennessee; and works closely with the VISN 9 office.

The Voluntary Service Assistant's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Respond to questions from patients - provide advisory and technical assistance to patients and hospital staff, escort and transport patients; push wheelchairs and gurneys, assist with morgue runs, and assist with medical equipment.

  • Secure patient's confidence/cooperation - assist in the explanation of procedures, position patients for desired results, cushion and shield patients as appropriate.

  • Provide administrative support - utilize personal computer; handle written correspondence and telephone inquiries.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is primarily physical which requires standing, walking, bending, lifting and pushing wheelchairs, gurneys and other medical equipment. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work requires heavy lifting of equipment or patients.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is throughout the TVHS medical centers and involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, or libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

GS-4 Generalized Experience: Applicants must have One full year of general experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-3) level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of General experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Work which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position being filled; Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). For example, an applicant who has 20 semester hours of undergraduate level education and 8 months of creditable general experience would equal 100% of the required experience for the position (33% of the education required to substitute for education and 67% of the required one year of experience). *(Transcripts required)
