VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

An exciting opportunity exists to join the clinical team in the Specialty Clinics at the VA Healthcare Systems Newington Campus. This part-time Registered Nurse positions allows you the opportunity to deliver care to a diverse patient population in collaboration with a dynamic healthcare team. Specialty Clinics include medical and surgical subspecialties, rotation to the Urgent Care area (sub acute ER care), the ATU for IV procedures, wound and central line management, IV procedures and outpatient procedures is required. Incumbent must be willing to be cross-trained to rotate through medical and surgical subspecialty clinics. Specialty Clinics are open Monday-Friday, but there is the possibility of weekend or evening hours in the future to meet patient care needs. Incumbent must be flexible to work extended evenings or weekends if needed for Veterans access. Duties include assessments, documentation of clinical interventions, preventative health measures, and participating in patient and family education.
Work Schedule:Monday through Saturday, (5) eight hour tours during the times of 7:00 am-8:00 pm. Must be flexible to work weekend and holidays.

Physical Requirements: *Registered Nurse should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position. The position will require walking, standing or sitting for periods of up to 8 hours. This position requires 90% walking and standing, and 10% sitting. *
U.S. citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
- Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
