JOB DESCRIPTION

Starter

SUMMARY: The Starter may be responsible for functioning in the following positions:

  • Fill in all positions as qualified in converting and corrugator on any shift

  • Required to learn Transfer Car operation as needed

  • Starter will be required to learn how to drive Power Industrial Trucks

Machinery can run up to speeds of 1,000 fpm and is equipped with knives, slitter blades,

belts, and die cutters. Employee works in close proximity to electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, gravitational, and mechanical energy sources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Starters are required to learn and perform the following functions. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Sets up the machine according to machine specific procedures.

  • Opens and closes machine when ready to run, check, and adjust.

  • Makes necessary adjustments during set up and run to insure quality work.

  • Monitors quality throughout the production run.

  • Completes the box Quality checks required on each order.

  • Performs the “Make-a-Box” quality check by folding up a box in the open position and checking for quality defects such as; glue joint, print quality, correct folding of all scores, and quality of board.

  • Shuts down machine and makes adjustments for quality when necessary.

  • Identifies any nonconforming material discovered during the run and notifies the department supervisor.

  • Enters production data into computer.

  • Clears machine jam ups.

  • Makes small mechanical repairs to equipment and reports significant and major mechanical failures to department supervisor immediately

  • Feeds corrugated blanks into hopper during run.

  • Checks quality of blanks being fed into hopper and communicates any quality problems to the operator.

  • Obtains required waste dunnage for top and bottom protector sheets for units.

  • Obtains required load tags for correct order identification.

  • Operates the load former for production run.

  • Stacks boxes onto the loadformer.

  • Ensures correct unit configuration per customer requirements.

  • Adheres to correct and proper clean up/housekeeping procedures.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree, or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to read a tape measure.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.

The employee frequently is required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb and/or balance on equipment and across conveyor equipment using platforms three to four inches in width.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Employee is required to handle a utility knife regularly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration, fumes, or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical current. Plant temperatures can range from 50°F to 110°F with seasonal changes. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud (95dB).

Standard workday is 8 hours with three 10 minute breaks. At times an employee is required to work a 12 hour shift with an additional 10 minute break. Breaks are determined by Supervisor.
