Summary

About the Agency

About Gardening at the Presidio The Presidio is rich in formal, ceremonial landscapes and historic neighborhood landscapes. Historic gates and tree-lined boulevards create a deep sense of place. The Main Parade Ground strengthens the dramatic setting of the Main Post and establishes it as the heart of the park. The Presidios historic neighborhood landscapes represent a century in the evolution of military social and domestic life, from the small-scale Civil War-era Funston Avenue with its quaint Victorians and grander Queen Annes to the enlisted mens housing above Baker Beach that was built in the 1950s and 70s. Rare ornamental plantings have been saved and historic gardens have been recreated with a contemporary sensibility, often with drought-tolerant native plants.

Duties

The Presidio is seeking an experienced Gardener to join our Landscape Stewardship teams. Once an Army base, the Presidio is now a new kind of National Park. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark District, in part because of its beautiful historic landscapes. Presidio Trust Gardeners and Gardener Workers maintain over 180 acres of property around residences, commercial buildings, and public common areas. In addition to lawns and ornamental plantings, the managed landscapes include 3 ball fields, 10 playgrounds, 1 pet cemetery, the only campground in San Francisco, and the beloved Main Parade Ground. Presidio Trust Gardeners help maintain the balance between native and cultural plantings in the Park. Our Gardeners and Gardener Workers are also instrumental in ensuring that our dedicated volunteers are prepared to help to perform basic grounds maintenance. Our Gardeners are often our first, and perhaps only, point of contact with the public. So in addition to experience and skills in turf management, pest control, pruning, and ornamental landscape maintenance, the ideal candidate will be an ambassador. You will interact and answer questions with knowledge, warmth, and friendliness, so that each visitor, volunteer, and resident you meet has a positive impression of the Presidio Trust. You are meticulous about the safety of your co-workers, visitors, volunteers, residents, and yourself. Responsibilities: Maintain landscape areas including trees, shrubs, ground cover, lawns, athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, camp sites, park furnishings, walks, and patios. Assess growing conditions and individual plant needs and characteristics to adjust soil; transplant; prune; and control plant disease and environmental damage. Prepare planting beds and lawns for planting; roll out sod in new or rehabilitated turf areas; plant trees and shrubs; recommend replacement plants, considering such variables as soil conditions, hardiness of plants, flowering periods and the overall landscape. Pick up litter; service Parks litter receptacles; service Parks public restrooms. Participate in meetings and events related to the Trust volunteer program; lead and direct volunteers in basic ground maintenance tasks; ensure volunteers safety; participate in meetings with other Trust personnel to refine landscape services delivery. Safely operate a variety of landscape equipment, hand and power tools including push mowers, riding mowers, tractors, rototillers, string line trimmers, power edgers, backpack blowers, chainsaws, and hedge trimmers; safely operate Trust vehicles.
