Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to assist journeyman level plumbers and higher graded plumbing workers by handing them materials, holding pipes in place, cutting pipes to exact measurements, etc.

Responsibilities

As the Plumbing Helper in this position, you will:

  • Assist journeyman level plumbers and higher graded employees in installing, maintaining and repairing utility, supply and disposal systems, fixtures, fittings and equipment, water closets and water heaters.
  • Use various hand and power tools.
  • Clean up work sites and equipment.
  • Assist other shops as workloads permits and emergencies come up.

Qualifications

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Plumbing Helper without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) assisting plumbers in installing or repairing supply and disposal systems; (2) assisting with testing various plumbing systems; (3) reading manuals such as work orders, blueprints, manufacturers' catalogs, etc.; (4) holding materials in place, making rough cuts for pieces of pipe; and (5) maintaining power tools to accomplish plumbing duties.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE:Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE:Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Work requires moderately heavy lifting and carrying of materials and equipment. The plumbing helper frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance. Work requires long periods of standing, bending, stooping, and some climbing of ladders and scaffolds.

Work Environment: The work is performed both inside and outdoors. Outdoor work is subject to inclement weather, noise, heat, cold, dirt, dust, etc. Inside work is subject to working in cramped positions and tight spaces. Subject to cuts, bruises, exposure to fumes and chemicals such as PVC pipe glue, exposure to contact with raw sewage, and injury from tools.
