The City of Harrisonburg, VA (population approximately 53K) is currently recruiting for the position of Police Officer. A multi-phase review process will determine which applicants will be interviewed for possible hire. An eligibility list will be created from the review process.

Salary: $37,419 - $50,169 annually, commensurate with training and experience, plus an excellent benefits package.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Harrisonburg Police Department Police Officer Testing Certificate (February 2018, June 2018 or January 2019);

  • High School Diploma or GED (College Degree or Military Experience preferred);

  • 21 years of age by July 1, 2019;

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien with an application for Naturalization filed and pending with Immigration Services;

  • Valid driver's license with good record per City policy;

  • Able to work 12-hour shift (6am - 6pm, 6pm - 6am, or 3pm - 3am);

  • Good physical condition;

  • Live within a one (1) hour drive of the Harrisonburg Police Department.

Physical Requirements: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements: Successful applicants for this position will be subject to a DMV Motor Vehicle check and must complete a satisfactory credit history review, drug screening, physical, psychological evaluation, polygraph and criminal background check.

Supplemental Information

To Apply: All candidates must complete a City of Harrisonburg online employment application by 5:00 pm EST on January 23, 2019 in order to be considered for this recruitment. Candidates should submit a copy of the Harrisonburg Police Officer Testing Certificate from February 2018, June 2018 or January 2019 in order to be considered for this process. There is one additional form required for consideration for the Police Officer position. The Public Safety Personal History Statement must be completed and received in the Human Resources Department by 5:00pm EST on February 4, 2019. Applicants will receive the Personal History Statement via email after the initial application is reviewed.

The following documents are some examples of what will be required at a later phase in the process: Social Security Card, Driver's License, Passport, Birth Certificate, Marriage/Divorce Documents, DD214, Sealed College Transcripts and High School Diploma. These documents are not required at the time of the Personal History Statement submission. When the applicable documents are requested by the Harrisonburg Police Department, you will be expected to provide them.
