Sutter Health SMU-Instructional Designer in Oakland, California
The Instructional designer (ID) is responsible to work in teams of faculty and staff, students and University committees. The ID supports faculty, staff and students in face-to-face, on-line, hybrid and web-based teaching and learning. In consultation with faculty, best practices in pedagogy and teaching methodology are encouraged. Course objectives are developed, and subsequent teaching materials are prepared, delivered and evaluated by the person in this role. The ID works closely with Information Technology Services (ITS) and the Center of Innovation and Excellence in Learning (CIEL) to ensure that current standards and best practices in teaching and learning are supported. The ID combines learning theory with technical knowledge to advance student-centered learning at the university.
Job Duties and Accountabilities:

Coordinates instructional design projects from inception to completion; maintains files and records.
- Consults and collaborates with faculty to analyze learning needs and plans for design/redesign of courses including outcomes, lessons, activities, assessments and learning resources.
Assists in the development of instructional strategies, course materials, assessment techniques, appropriate integration of educational technologies and best practices.
Designs and produces learning materials in a variety of formats including print, graphics, audio, video, animation and multimedia to support teaching, learning, and university’s information needs, and is able to integrate learning materials into the learning management system.
Assists/supports faculty in technology tools and methods, use of instructional software, and effective uses of multimedia.
Researches and makes recommendations on educational best practices, instructional resources, educational technologies and multimedia hardware/software to support teaching and learning.
Designs, develops, and delivers workshops and training to faculty and staff in the use of educational technologies and educational best practices; maintains records.
- Facilitates curriculum development sessions, documents findings, and writes reports.

Education and/or Experience:
• Master’s degree or certificate in Instructional Design or related field preferred
• Bachelor’s degree required
• 3 – 5 years of experience in, or preparing for a similar position
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated proficiency in both Mac and PC skills
• Experience working in higher education preferred
• Familiarity with teaching/learning modalities commonly utilized in on-line and hybrid instruction
