American Red Cross WIC Service Area Manager in San Diego, California

Job Description:

Responsible for the administration and management of WIC Site(s). Provides supervision, technical and professional guidance and support to the site staff. Plans, directs, and implements department, service or program overall strategic goals and objectives. Oversees the work assignment and performance of staff and volunteers. Represents the Red Cross and promotes services and programs to the communities.


Responsible for the administration and management of WIC Site(s).

  • Implements and coordinates the day-to-day functions that support the site(s)

  • Provides input to, implements and contributes to agency's caseload, breastfeeding promotion and support, and other department goals.

  • Complies with all fiscal and operational requirements prescribed by the American Red Cross and the State WIC Branch, including those outlined in Red Cross employee handbook.

  • Continually evaluate WIC services for effectiveness

  • Identify new areas for service which may enhance or expand service to the community

  • Provide for quality control in education and direct service

  • Responsible for security of office

  • Ensure adequate safeguards, safes, locking arrangements, etc., are utilized for the protection of Red Cross WIC property, including inventory items

  • Make sure site is in a clean, safe and orderly condition consistent with chapter standards

  • Complete incident reports accurately and in accordance with agency guidelines

  • Work in various office positions to support co-workers and participants

Hires, trains, coaches, counsels and evaluates performance of direct reports.

  • Conduct Individual and team meetings on a regular basis to establish goals, negotiate key responsibilities and provide performance feedback.

  • Ensure all staff have a clear understanding of their job responsibilities and are provided technical guidance and support as required

  • Submit performance evaluations in a timely manner, reflect an honest objective appraisal of performance, appropriate achievable development goals and realistic career planning.

  • Prepare written documentation and counseling statements for staff when appropriate.

  • Comply with labor laws and Chapter personnel policies is demonstrated.

Provides nutrition education to WIC participants to assure quality service

  • Determines the medical/nutritional risk of applicants/participants by evaluating anthropometric, biochemical and other health-related data.

  • Prescribes supplemental foods.

  • Implements agency's Nutrition Education Plan and related documents.

  • Makes decisions to disqualify participants.

  • Coordinates individual and group nutrition education encounters consistent with participants category, language, and status in the program.

  • Communicates with participant's health care provider as needed for continuation of quality service.

  • Provides counsel on nutritional and health-related problems in an empathetic manner, observing sound nutritional practices and participant confidentiality.

  • Makes available information pertaining to community resources to clients.

  • Delivers nutrition education classes when necessary

  • Provides feedback to WIC admin staff on field tested classes.

Carries out any additional assignments required.


Education: Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. MS in Nutrition, nursing or public health preferred. Registered Dietitian preferred. Certified Lactation Educator, IBCLC preferred. Bilingual preferred.

Experience: Minimum 3 to 7 years in implementing and advancing social service programs (WIC or other public health preferred) and providing leadership to a department, program or service. Ability to manage multiple priorities with strong skills in planning and problem-solving. Ability to relate well and effectively with diverse groups and individuals.

Management Experience: Minimum 1 to 3 years management experience.

Skills and Abilities: Develops strategies to achieve organizational goals. Demonstrated analytical and decision-making skills to develop creative processes for continuous program or service improvements.

Other: Intermediate proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Familiarity with federal, state and local employment laws. May involve travel.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

Work Schedule and Location: Normal hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. including some Saturdays and evenings; flexible schedule as approved by supervisor. Depending on need, may be asked to work at various Red Cross WIC locations in San Diego County.

Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights up to 20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information. Overall mobility is essential including sitting for long periods of time, driving a vehicle and working under challenging conditions.

Work Conditions:Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to Emergency services relief work. May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout the State and Red Cross system.
