Nationwide is hiring a Claims Specialist III in our E&S Department (1st Party Property). Qualified Candidates MUST HAVE Property Claims Handling experience (commercial and/or personal lines - NOT auto), outstanding communication skills (oral & written), experience with Xactimate Estimating Software, and experience with a Claims Documentation System. College Degree and/or Guidewire experience is a plus. This position will be filled in Scottsdale, AZ; however, working-from-home is a possibility for the right person.

Investigates, evaluates, and resolves property damage claims and lawsuits of a severe and complex nature, or from a specialty line or program of significant value to the organization. File inventory typically includes litigation and complex coverages. May assist in the coaching, training and mentoring of individual team members. May act as a subject matter expert in a particular line of business or risk. Has contact with external customers which involves maintaining, developing and influencing relationships with major customers or key business partners.

Job Description

Reporting Relationships: Reports to E&S/Specialty Claims Manager, E&S/Specialty Senior claims Manager.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Investigates, evaluates, and negotiates more severe and complex claims and litigation to a successful resolution and in compliance with company quality standards. This may include such claims as arson, fraud.

  • Responsible for managing the work and performance of vendors to achieve successful resolution of claims.

  • Is responsible for meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.

  • May assist in the development, coaching, training and mentoring of individual team members. May act as a subject matter expert in a particular line of business or risk.

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining open and trusting working relationships with insureds in order to gather pertinent information.

  • Responsible for timely and appropriate evaluation of claims to identify and manage reserves in compliance with Company standards.

  • Maintains current knowledge of: all insurance lines; court decisions which may impact the claims function; current guidelines in the claims function; and policy changes and modifications. This may require attendance at various seminars and training sessions.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education: High school diploma or GED Required. College degree preferred. Additional education in a particular line of business may be required by the hiring business unit. Insurance coursework preferred.

Licenses/Registrations/Designations: Associates must obtain the required Federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails or is unable to obtain required licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit, the associate will be ineligible to continue in the position.

Completion of insurance courses such as IIA, AEI, or CPCU preferred.

Experience: Five years property claims handling experience or comparable work experience preferred. Commercial property experience preferred.Prior experience in directing defense counsel required. Prior experience with complex coverage issues and reinsurance reporting required. Prior multi-jurisdictional, E&S or other specialty lines experience preferred. Specific experience in a particular line of business may be required by the hiring business unit.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of commercial insurance and E & S or other specialty insurance.Familiarity with various types of insurance policies.Knowledge of the processes of the independent adjusters and attorneys in order to manage claims and assist in litigation management. Advanced knowledge of insurance theories and practices, insurance contracts and their application.Ability to analyze facts and coverages in order to evaluate damages. Ability to direct independent adjusters and attorneys in claims and litigation management. Proven ability in customer service required. Ability to communicate interpersonally with individuals and groups, via the telephone and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of technical/professional clients. Ability to develop and maintain open and trusting working relationships with insureds in order to gather pertinent information. Ability to work independetntly and deal with ambiguity. Ability to present to all levels of management.
